I think victory in Iraq would be a measure of stability where the crime/murder rate becomes favorable compared with the rest of the world.
I'm not saying it's possible. For the US to finish the job, I think we have to abandon our current management (er, prez), get on our knees, apologize, and beg for UN assistance. I'm sorry it had to come to this, but we seriously need to apologize for the buffoon we [allegedly] voted into power.

I think AntiDisEs... (the first answer) had it right until he began laying the blame on Bush. And he failed to mention that a stable government would be of vital importance to our Western objectives before any pull-out could satisfactorily be considered.
Bush isn't necessarily the reason that things still look bad over there - they could look a lot worse, as a matter of fact, and keep in mind that vilifying the president is always an easy song for an out-party to sing. When Viet Nam was hot, the Republicans did it to the Johnson administration and the Democrats returned the favor to Nixon and the boys in their turn. I suspect that most of you are to young to remember these things - unlike me, you had to learn it the hard way, in a history class.
Nonetheless, getting the violence down to a "reasonable and tolerable" level would be enough to bring an end to our involvement... That may not happen for quite a while though. And, now the Kurds are going to officially get into it as an Iraqi military unit. They, the Kurds, aren't tolerated well by any of the Southern Iraqis; so, hold on to your hats, folks. The winds of war might still be blowin-up a big gust or two.
(Officially, victory in Iraq has already been claimed... now what we need is peace in Iraq. The two aren't even in the same parking deck. We've won the war... Now we need to win a few hearts and minds.)

Nothing by all means. Many contradictions: the USA unconditional support of Israel. There is not one single Iraqi political party support the USA policy most are loyal to Iran Israel # 1 enemy.
take the Israeli variable out you may have a sound policy in Iraq. Read President Carter new book and the Backer&Hamliton Report.

Well who knows leaving right know would be awful i guess until the civil war is over and we can leave until then in fact even when we leave it will always be a failure Because of the chaos we created for our own personal interest related to oil something that makes billions of dollars a year. The truth is our brave men and women are fighting for oil money none of it they will ever see nor will their family. If we manage to have peaceful relations over time in that region maybe 15-20 years from now it will be better but you can say that about anything japan makes us a lot of money we are business partners with japan this whole thing could have been avoided if we just had a business meeting!
what a joke it will be someday all of those people losing their sight arms legs dying in a bloody pool of guts their own I might add for company's personal financial gain its sad.

Victory would be leaving behind a reasonably stable, and reasonabley democratic society in Iraq.

victory is impossible but we measure it as the Iraqi government having enough strength and influence to control its own country and simply put those people cant do it

IMO...When the "mission" is accomplished. When we kill all the terrorists going in there and their government takes control of that and everything's in order. Unfortunately it's not happening any time soon and we need to do what we need to do.
