shakira was mistreated by her past boyfriend ?

this is for shakira fans , somebody told me that when she was like 19 years she had a boyfriend seventeen years older than her , and he mistreated her and then she dumped him because of that ,and now he is on jail for mistreat her wife , this was in the begginnig of her career

is that true?
