Is it true that when dogs are about to die, they go somewhere to be a lone and dig a hole?
If this is true it would really reassure me.

Thank you very much for your answers. I had a husky put to sleep, and he had dug a hole in the backyard and laid in it and wasn't walking normally anymore. I just wanted to know we did the right thing.

I don't know about digging a hole, but I have had two dogs die when I was younger, and been with several of my friends when then were close to their time. They will typically start curling up in an enclosed space where they will feel comfortable. If a dog starts "nesting" (when they start actually making a den or nes for themselves) then it is close to their time. If your dog is in a lot of pain, or extremely sick, you may consider euthanizing. I know to most people this will sound cruel, but it is much more humane.
A close friend of mine had a dog with cancer all through their body, and was on some heavy pain killers towards the end. She couldn't be in the room when her dog was euthanized, so she asked me if I would be there with her dog. I was and was petting him and loving him as the different shots were given. The first shot made him very sleepy, until he fell asleep; the next shot made his heart stop and stop breathing. He was completely comfortable, and didn't experience any pain, and knew till his last moment that he was loved.

Some of them seem to know when it's time. I've heard the story about dogs going off to die, but don't know of any verified cases. What I have seen is a number of dogs and cats who seem to get 'that look' that says they've had enough and are ready to go.

Well some people belived that elephant went to a sertan place to die, but it is not true. They just die. I think that is the same with Dogs.
Perhaps the dog you are talking about is slightly depressed. I dont know why cause its a dog and dogs are awsome!

Some ill people know when they are getting ready to die so I would suspect this holds true to the animal population also.

I am so sorry for your loss, my dog let me know when it was time. I had him for 17 years and I knew. All we can do is be there for them as they pass to the Rainbow Bridge and know they are in our hearts forever.
God Bless you
