I have scolded him over and over. What can I do to prevent this?

You must be patient, just like a toddler, sometimes he will forget himself.

Also, just because he is crate trained, it does not exonerate you of responsibility for getting him out regularly.

Praise works better then scolding.

Well my dogs were crate trained too and then crapped all over the house since it wasn't "his house". I kept walking em, and doing the normal potty things and eventually they [for some reason] isolated pottying to the stairs. Weird. So I blocked it off with a baby gate and they HAD to go outside! Just continue with the potty training. He realizes th crate is his house so he wont potty there. As for the rest of the house, it's YOURS.

Your pup is still a baby. If he potties in the house, I suspect you aren't being proactive enough in taking him outside often enough.

don't spank the poor thing. He is pottying in the house because he is confused. Help him learn where you want him to go. Go outside with him and give him a treat when he potties outside.

When I was training my puppy, I took her out very frequently, and gave her a short leash while outside. So there was nothing to do out there except go potty. Then when she did, i would give her a treat. I did this for a while, then she eventually got it that it was much better to go outside then inside. 5 months is still very young, he'll learn.

Take him out more often and reward him when he *goes* outside.. If you get excited about it, he will get excited about it! If he is not neutered yet, that could be a big part of it.. He will stop though and learn with the proper training!
