So does my two, it does not hurt them so I just let them go for it, just don't get into the habit of them drinking out of a running tap.

Cats are weird, but that doesn't help. Cats prefer fresh water, so chances are the water in the shower isn't stagnant. I have two bowls of water and a lovely 'pet fountain'. Before the fountain, they regularly drank from the bowls, but with the addition of the fountain, no one touches the bowls. Her drinking from the shower won't hurt her and if you remove that source, she will drink what ever is available (in the cat bowl). If the shower thing really bothers you, shut the bathroom door. I would still suggest one of the fountains, they love them. Just make sure it is always full (or the motor will burn out) and cleaned regularly.

I have the same problem and have found the only way to stop him is to keep the bathroom door shut (My cat also likes drinking out of the fish tank). I have come to the conclusion that it must cause some chemical change in the water when the water has been used. Animals have an accute sense for chemical and mineral differences in water so unless the dirty footprints are annoying you I wouldn't worry about it.

My 15-year-old cat started looking to drink from the bathroom sink and/or toilet even though she had water in her bowl. I just thought she had learned that the water in the sink and toilet were colder, and it wasn't until she became obviously ill and died that I put two-and-two together and realized she must have had a fever or an infection and needed either colder water or just more frequent drinks.
If this is a new thing for your cat maybe you should get her checked out. I feel so stupid for just thinking it was cute that she liked the colder water.

The only way for you do get your cat to stop drinking out of the shower, or kitchen sink, or bathroom sink, etc; is to get rid of the item the cat is drinking water out of, which for you would mean getting rid of the shower.
Once a cat has found a novelty place to drink water, they will always do it. My cat jumps up on my bathroom vanity to drink out of the sink faucet when I am getting ready for work in the morning. Other than that; he has his own water dish, which I change every couple of days now (Got tired of doing it for no reason), but he drinks out of the dogs' water bowl.
Cats are definitely their own people.

And this is bad.... how? It probably just likes it because it's fresher. Telling the cat it has to drink from a bowl instead of a shower is like someone telling you that you have to drink from a mug instead of a glass. What's it hurting? Let it drink from the shower.

Cats are funny like that. We have 4, they love the shower and the sink the most.
Be sure you have a clean bowl of water and make sure it's not plastic, as germs grow there.

Cats are "programmed" to seek for as many distinctive aspects of water as achievable. interior the wild, this could make a great form of expertise—you never understand while a watering hollow could without notice dry up. even however you're offering clean water, there must be some reason he prefers the faucet. possibly his water ran dry at some point, and he recollects the bowl being empty? possibly he dropped in basic terms a sprint nutrition in there as quickly as and he recollects the water tasting humorous? considering which you have been permitting him to drink from the faucet for quite a few months, it must be confusing to break the habit. you're able to evaluate squirting him with a twig bottle each time he jumps as much as the sink. finally he will make the relationship and end applying the sink.

Why stop it?
It doesn't seem to be doing any harm. Sometimes kitties don't like the container you've put the water in or they just prefer the fresh water that comes out of the tap.
I don't think it's a big deal.

You can caught him in the act & shout "No" to him. My cat likes to drink water from the sink that my mum uses to wash dishes. He once got stamach upset due to that. Usually if I caught him in the act, I would called out "No'' to him & called him bad boy, and punished him for not having treats for that day if he repeats the act! And it works! Now he drinks from his bowl. But for precaution, my mum would always cover the sink if nobody at home.
