It depends on where you want the conversation to go and how you feel about this person.

If they're just an acquaintance, and you all you want to do is be polite, just one simple "wassup" back is fine.

If they're a friend, and you want to affirm the friendship, try doubling whatever they said, "wassup wassup" where the second "wassup" is exaggerated (hold the 'u' for a second longer or something). By the way, this works on lots of greetings:

Friend: yo
You: yo yo

Friend: hey
You: hey hey

If they're a friend, and you'd like to initiate a conversation, then add some kind of question to your response: "wassup wassup - just chillin' in the crib. wassup witch u?"

Good luck.

I pretty much say "sup" back to them, or even "hey" because if they greet you with "What's up" or "Sup" I take it as "Hello." Say whatever you want. Go off on a tangent of what's up. Have fun with it.

if they ask whats up that pretty much means there asking "what are u doing" so just think of that question when they ask u then answer. and when they ask sup it practically means the same thing as whats up.

They are asking what is up, so just asking back would be nonsense unless you said, 'nothing' first the "sup with you?" next.
But it's kinda like store clerks asking "how you doing?" -
They DON'T really care . . .

It really doesn't matter. Anything that has to do with "introductions" can be said. Examples: sup, wassup, whats up, hey, hi, hello, how are you?, yo, hola, nothing, not 2 much, nuttin much here, u? im good and yourself?

I'm pretty sure you just say "sup" back at them. At least that's how I've heard other people do it. Of course, I just say "the ceiling" to be silly.

It depends on how much information you like to give. they expect you to summarize your condition and present experience to them bearing in mind your relationship with them.

Basically, they want to know what you are up to. So if you are feeling okay you say 'Nothing much' iif you are doing nothing much and are having no deep-felt sentiments or your say 'just gym' if you are going to gym. Or you can say 'the usual' if that is the case.

Saying whatsup is a way to try to gauge your mood; are you stressed, are you happy, have you won the lottery. It's social without being intrusive. A person who really wants to know how you are doing will ask you how you are doing.
