yes they can, i guess it would depend on how much you are drinking or smoking, or what ever the substance is. And if it has not maked you an addict yet well give it time, it is working on it, and you will get there before you know it, so way not just not do it, or do it as they say on speical occations, but even 2-3 times a month can be putting you on a road to becoming an regular daily addict. So be really careful, cause you never know, and even when u think that you can control it or have it under control it can bit you in the ***, and then it lets you know it know has you.
so please be very careful.

The World Health Organization defines "addiction" this way:
Repeated use of a psychoactive substance or substances, to the extent that the user (referred to as an addict) is periodically or chronically intoxicated, shows a compulsion to take the preferred substance (or substances), has great difficulty in voluntarily ceasing or modifying substance use, and exhibits determination to obtain psychoactive substances by almost any means.
There doesn't appear to be a universally agreed-upon, quantitative definition of what constitutes an "addiction," or the level of dependency needed to be classified as an "addict."

the definition of an addict is one who cannot get along without the substance and no it does not mean you have to have it everyday but you need it on a regular basis just as an alcoholic does not have to drink everyday as some do others drink on binges but once they start they can't stop. Many addicts start only on weekends but then more often but some it is every weekend but has to be every weekend

Yes. I know of a woman that got drunk once, woke up feeling like crap and wanted to drink more She figured that was dumb, and headed to AA. After all if she hit her self with a hammer and it hurt what sane person would want more?
If the substance causes problems in your life and you still use it you are an addict.

It's more an issue of quantity vs. time frame. An addict has no control once they start using. Why binge drinking can lead to alcoholism even if intervals remain far apart. Has nothing to do with everyday use or not although it can lead to it.
