Maybe because the Pope isn't actually God's "mouthpiece" and the Catholic Church is wrong?

God gained't tell the Pope some thing because he would not exist. God (a minimum of even as speaking about the Pope) is only an imaginary voice contained in the Pope's head so of direction the Pope won't be able to learn some thing by using talking to himself. (regardless of if he believes he's talking to somebody else)

Dude: He [God] did ... in the Book of Isaiah, in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible: God states that He, "sits on the CIRCLE of the earth" ! The earth was round in shape !!! Galileo had his work endorsed by God 1000s of years before his [Galileo's] time. The Popes, like most people, assume for various reasons that he or she is "right" ... but God is always right [righteous] !!! Science (true), only discovers what God has already known, eons in advance !!!

What Galileo published to get himself in trouble had everything against it.
It was wrong. He tried to explain tides without gravity.
It was wriiten as a dialogue, in order to bypass a requirement that he gain Papal approval prior to publishing.
One of the characters was an unflattering charactature of the Pope.
It was a fair response.

John T is on the right track. Old time Popes have been notorious being deluded by secular items. This could have been the case. Another case could be that they were afraid to lose power. The Jews (well the Jews in power(Sadducees and Pharisees)) in the New Testament wouldn't admit that Jesus was the Messiah that they had been hoping so dearly for.

>>Since, you know, Popes get direct revelations from God..<<
That is a myth.

They wouldn't have believed him. Galileo was telling them stuff that those heretic arabs had known centuries before. They refused to use the knowledge because of it's origins.

popes got the idea they could never be wrong about anything, including being stupid. they always were wrong, and stupid. john paul the second is a good example. he stated publicly that only roman catholics would be going to heaven, everyone else will go to hell. at least he won't be alone in the heat. there will be many other popes to greet him there.
