Obesity in Dogs
Your dog is likely obese if you can't see a difference between his ribcage area and his abdomen. Dogs become overweight due to lack of exercise, overeating, and occasionally a genetic tendency for extra pounds.

To fix your dog's pudginess, put him on a food diet and increase the amount of his exercise. Go for longer walks, play that extra game of fetch, and limit the amount of treats.

Be consistent and patient. It may take a while for you to see some results, but your canine's health is worth the time and effort.-

what you can do is instead of cutting down on your babys food, buy him purina fit and trim dog food, it still has all the yummy taste, and it will fill him up with out you feeling guilty about starving your doggie. and also its easier than having to hassle by measureing his food, and worrying that its not working, you should see some good results. just take him out for a walk, at least 10 minutes a day, and feed him that dog food i mentioned, and he will lose some weight the safe and guilt free way ;]

Just like people, cut down on food and increase activity. Still make sure he gets plenty of variety and treats and is happy and stays on routine. But instead of a full bowl of food, try maybe cutting a fifth or quarter out. Also take him for walks or play fetch or anything thatll get him moving for more than a few mins. If he is seriously overweight or having joint problems call a vet, you may need a special diet or type of food.
One last thing, still make sure to provide plenty of water all the time.

The best thing is exercise, plenty of exercise.. Depending on how many treats you give, cut that down or completely out, try to give only treats low in fat and/or break them in half, instead of giving the whole thing.. You can even switch to a "light" or low fat food..

Feed less food, cut back on treats and walk the dog more.

ample walks, cut on treats (or change your treats to fresh fruits: baby carrots/ bananas), temporary change to vegetarian diet (needs vet's advice)...
or have another active dog to play with your's, during the day-time while you are @ work.
