Dog Litter
Litter training was once reserved only for cats, but in recent years been used to train canines for housebreaking as well. The equipment is very basic and consists of a sturdy plastic pan to house the litter, a bag of dog litter, and a scooper to clean out the mess. The concept to teach your dog is very similar to paper training, but clean up is often easier. You scoop, toss, and you're done. The pellets are a highly absorbent material, imbedded with a scent which is meant to attract dogs to eliminate there.

Litter training is ideal for small to medium sized dogs and for people who live in apartments or lack easy access to the outdoors. -

Litter training for dogs is to train them to use a litter box in the house. You must use dog litter. Cat litter is not made of the same things as dog litter. Cat litter can be dangerous to your dog if ingested. And if you have cats, your dog should be kept away from the cats' litter box, or they will usually try to eat the cat poop. Put the cat litter box either up where the cats can climb and the dog can't, or put the litter box in a room the dog can't get in (use a child or puppy gate that the cats can jump over and the dog can't).

Dogs weighing 25 pounds and under are the best candidates for litter training. Dogs larger than that can learn, but they are just very large to use a litter pan cleanly, the amount of poop they leave would be rather much to scoop, and the pan would have to be changed very frequently because of the amount of urine absorbed into the litter.

You can train your dog to use the litter box when inside and the yard when outside. We live in a third floor apartment and having Stanly, our Chihuahua, litter trained is a blessing. He uses the litter box most of the time, but will still go to his "spot" in the yard when we have him outside.

Purina makes SecondNature dog litter, which is what we use. They have lots of helpful information at www.doglitter.com

We tried to paper train Stanly at 14 weeks, but all he did was shred the newspapers and potty pads. After 2-3 weeks of this we saw some dog litter at the pet store where we buy most of our supplies. We thought it was worth trying. And we are ever so glad we did. It took Stanly a little over a day (about 28 hours) to litter train, he was completely accident-free within a week.
