Why do people feel that it is the dogs fault for him being a "vicious" dog.....I raised pits and NEVER had one attack me, maul me or bite me......these dogs are like children....if you raise them to be mean and vicious....guess what your gonna get that.....dogs, like kids are products of the upbringing they were TAUGHT. Yes people should be held responsible for the actions of ANY dog that they possess not just bulldogs (pits).... want to see my babie go to www.webshots.com/sparkydabomb and look in my dogs album.....Dogs need to be treated with love, understanding...not beat on kicked on, chained up and taught to hurt people unless they are hurting the owner.....dogs are our friends and would you treat your friend the way some treat pits and expect them not to turn on you or others? Come on people get a grip......pits aren't the problem...it's the owners, and HUMANS fault not the dog....he's acting on training and instict....

Because people don't understand the breed. Pitbulls were never bred for human-dog aggression. In fact, back in the day, a dog that was aggressive to the human was put down.
My pitbull is 12 yrs old and wonderful. I got him before I had children and my father had a fit! He swore that Gus would eat my babies. Well, guess what? Gus never once showed any signs of aggression. He didn't want the kids to crawl on him so he'd make a noise then get up and move... which is fine. And now, my dad loves Gus because he sees how protective Gus is.
I will absolutely own another pitbull. In fact, I've been looking... but nervous about taking in a rescue since my kids are still young. If they were older, I would cuz I know whose alpha dog in this house. LOL
Another thing, people don't realize how smart pitbulls are. UPS man came the other day, Gus was outside with me.... UPS man was nervous, I told Gus to go inside (if the door is closed, he'll go stand by it) and the UPS man was impressed. So it was a great lesson for the UPS man.
Love your puppies for me

I must respectfully disagree here on one point. People who say, " it is the humans fault, not the dogs ", are mistaken in these points. Sure, you can train up a mean dog out of any dog. Though to say the dog is merely a" download " of human training is an insult to dog autonomy and intelligence. Dogs are no more carbon copies of you, than your children are. I have seen dogs that were intrinsically bad. We are talking about normal pits, though. The real point of any discussion about pits, is not any inherent propensity to do violence, but the superior armament when they do violence. The jaw strength of a good sized pit is many times that of the average dog; at about 1200 pounds per square inch. The dog is impervious, almost, to pain and is armored like a rhino. Many municipalities have had very bad experiences with pits who were family pets and thought not violent. The problem, as I see it, is when your usual dog, say German Shepard, attacks, the damage is usually contained. A pit can do a lot of damage once he gets going. The brute reality of this is not in dispute. Pit bulls and Rottweilers have the record in deaths and damages proportion. This is why people need to be cautious. The laws are written to reflect that caution. We live in the real world and need to deal every day with these realities.

PS The last dog I cried about and I did not even cry when my mother died, was a pit. Oreo was a 5 year old pit at the SFSPCA and I always worked him. He was a very good dog with people, but he would take dominance postures with other dogs. One day, when I was not there, He was down in the courtyard of the SPCA. The gardener was trimming bushes and not readily visible. Oreo, being nearsighted, charged the bush shaking and grapped on to the gardeners foot or just brushed, the story was not clear. Ethenasia was ordered, as per law. The last time I saw him and the look he gave me will stay with me forever. That is why I stress caution with pits.I do not want to see another Oreo dead because people will not face reality!!

Same rule applies for all the fighting dogs, like the Tosa (Japanese Fighting Dog) and the Pitbull.. They were bred to be aggressive- by humans. Even the original British BullDog was a vicious fighter (bull-baiting). While we can create vicious fighters, we can also reverse this process and create gentle loving dogs. It's hard to believe the Bulldog used to be a killing maching. By breeding your most gentle and most loving pitbulls, you are helping to change the breed (and the unfortunate stereotype). Many years from now (sooner than later hopefully), people will forget the pitbull ever had such a bad reputation now that they're all such sweet loving dogs.

Okay I dont agree with the statement that pits are like children. That is so not true . Pits are animals with animal instincts and were bred for fighting thusfore a propencity of violence does exsist in this breed . I had a friend of mine who raised a pit with nothing but kindness . Well one day the pit went through the screen after a woman who was walking and minding her own business. before my friend could get out the door the lady had 22 bites on her and he was still holding her when my friend dragged the pit off of her.He paid the ladys medical bills and had the dog put down dont tell me it is all in how you raise them . they are like loaded guns they can go off at any time . I dont trust them and will never have one around me or my family . Pits are the problem and they should be let go of and let the breed die out .

I agree! Loved dogs or any animal for that matter are a blessing! I have been in homes where an abused cat, would attack for no reason, except their own! It is so easy to blame the animal and the owner deny responsibility! Thank God, some of us know better! My cat is 23 in September, God willing!

YOU ARE 110% CORRECT!!!!!!! It is about time people stand up for these dogs. I am a proud mom of a pitbull and she is the love of my life. I have also been around numerous pits and when raised correctly they are , in my opinion, the best dog. Way to go Robert!

YOU ARE RIGHT ( I AM NOT YELLING BY TYPING BIG-I DO THIS SO I CAN SEE IT BETTER) MY BROTHER HAD A PIT AND SHE WAS THE SWEETEST DOG EVER. ALOT OF OWNERS OF PITS WANT PEOPLE TO BE AFRAID OF THEIR DOG, IT'S THEIR EGO TRIP-ANY ANIMAL CAN BE VICIOUS, DEPENDING ON HOW THEY ARE RAISED. AS FOR WHAT THE NEWS REPORTS-THE MEDIA IS BIASED-IF AN ANIMAL ATTACKS A PERSON THEY ONLY REPORT THAT, THEY NEVER REPORT WHAT THAT PERSON WAS DOING TO THE ANIMAL THAT MADE THE ANIMAL ATTACK.

My answer is the same as many that have already been given ...

generally it is the idiot owners that make an idiot dog.
Some breeds are more aggressive by nature in certain situations BUT it is how the owner deals with it that makes the difference....

sadly ... many Morons select dogs such as your breed because it is a TOUGH looking dog .. and then they fail to follow through with responsible pet ownership and discipline . INFACT many moron owners make their dogs worse.and as a result responsible owners suffer.....

yah its how the dog is raised because some pittbulls can be very nice but since some are used as gaurd dogs the owners try to make them mean.

Pits were BRED specifically for dog fighting and as such have deadly insticnts and abilities. Please do not use just your experience. I watch and read the news constantly and hear about pit attacks constantly maiming and killing children and pets. The stats back this up. If you plan on buying a house they will not insure your house if you have apit or a rott bcuz they are considered dangerous dogs. What if your dog suddenly attacked you or a small child or someone else's small pet? How would you feel? Pits no matter how docile are like loaded guns but you dont know what or when they will be triggered. Maybe never, but you NEVER know!
