as a cutter myself (well i havnt done it in over a year) i can pretty much tell you why. people think we're crazy. hell we might be. but no one understands WHY we do it. they dont understand the release we get, and how it feels good. i kno i cut because i have problems coping with things...but at least i'm not out killing other ppl for fun, or getting my rocks off on someone elses pain. another misconception that people have is that we cut because we want to die. i'm not suicidal. i cut because it helps with anger, and depression, and many other things. i'm 23 years old and i have been a cutter for 11 years. i never mind talking to people about it, because i have gotten control over it. when i was younger i used to crave cutting. literally CRAVE...just like people crave a cigarette, or like pregnant women crave weird food (lame joke there..couldnt think of a good enough example to get my point across).

people think its bad because they dont understand, they think we're crazy, it scared them that we cut, they want to help but dont know how, they dont know what to say..and they've never been in our shoes.

i would never condone cutting to someone else. i would never say its 'ok' or 'right'. but i've got enough experience of my own to know that unless you've been in my shoes, you cant judge me, or say that i'm bad.

Because it is harming yourself, and they just don't understand why anyone would do that, or self mutalated yourself. I know i have been down that road, i have self mutalated myself, i today i don't hide it, if they can't handle seeing the scares then they don't have to look, and if they want to ask me about it i will tell them the truth about it, as i am you. But if you can stop now , that is the best thing you can do for yourself, cause it is a very bad copeing skill, and you have found out by now i would hope that doing this , it just gets so you have to do it more and more to get the relief, and the relief gets less and less each time you do it. It is just not a healthy way of copeing and if you do not understand that, then you need to be seeing a therapist, and if you are you need to be seeing one more often, and maybe even go into a hospital , and go to groups there, and listen and learn, it is not a pretty thing to see, or be doing, and it is not a good copeing skill, so why not learn some good coping skills so you can quit self mutalation, and live a happier and healthier life. Go get some help now, and since every thing is shut, call the crisis line, or an er, or even the police, they will actully just come and sit with you and talk and not hall you in, if you call, some of them are really there to help you. So give these idea's a thought, and call, and get some help. Now Please.

Well, on a medical level ppl think that self mutilation is wrong because it is a clear sign (usually) that something is really messed up in the persons life. If someone is willing to hurt themselves, then something is going on, which means it is wrong because a healthy person doesn't hurt themself (excluding religious and some other forms of self harm because that is a different type, and not really even classified as self harm).
On a moral level people think it is bad, because lots of people believe that the body is a temple (such as christians) and thus if you mutilate your body it is a sin, and is wrong. Also, people just believe that you shouldn't hurt your body, because it is a gift and because it is your only one.
Socially, ppl think it is wrong because it is believed to be something used for pity from others and that the self harmer is just being a drama queen/king. It is believed by some as just a means to get attention, when in most cases it really isn't. It is a sign of mental illness, and socially ppl don't like mental illness because it is believed by some to be a sign of weakness, and just classicly the mentally ill are frightful (you know the classic nutcase that escapes from an asylum and goes out and kills the first person he/she meets). So yeah, that's why i think so. I personally think that self mutilation is wrong, because I believe it is a sign that something is wrong in the person and that you shouldn't be hurting your body because I believe it is a temple. I believe that self harmers need help though, and many ppl don't want to even bother and just push it off as a weakness or an attention seeking device. So, I think it is 'wrong' and also not good. And I would like to point out that I am as well a self harmer.

These people are saying it's sick to hurt yourself but most of them don't have a healthy diet, or may smoke or drink.

You know what people? That's killing you just as fast as self-mutilation!

Sorry, question asker. I am a self-injurer too, and the only thing I can come up with is that people still see this as drastically different from the self-destructive crap they do. Because it's such an obvious act of harm...we can't mistake what we do as 'healthy', so we are seen as 'sick'.

But people also know good and well that junkfood, cigarettes, and alcohol can kill you, they still do it. It baffles me why this is any different.

Cutting is your way of dealing with what you feel you need to deal with. Contrary to poplular belief, cutters do not want to kill themselves, it is just thier way of coping. Other people may excercise, you just happen to cut. I know someone that cuts and its tough on me but more on her. It is called self-injury and cutting is not the only way people self injure. A really good book is called Bodily Harm: The Breakthrough Healing Program for Self-Injurers. Do not feel ashamed you have done nothing wrong. Be careful and good luck with dealing and coping.

I think it is because many people have a gut reaction to it. Being squeamish, finding it strange and not understanding why its done. I don't judge people who do it. I am more curious as to why. You are the only person responsible for your life and how you experience it. I don't think its any other persons business. I can understand if people are concerned about it who are close to you, but other than that, it doesn't matter what others think or say. Just maybe think about why you are doing it. Merely a suggestion.

It is bad because it indicates that you have problem for one thing and the fact that it can cause many other problems like difficulty finding a vein for blood draws or IV's due to scarring. Also what happens if you cut too deep and start bleeding severely?

My friend was a cutter for years. She has scars all over her body; she had a kit in which she kept different instruments which would give her different types of cuts. She's stopped cutting herself after she miscalculated a cut and ended up in the hospital. She's on medication now. It's not easy and everyday is a struggle for her.
Please get the help you need.

That's part of your illness, that you think hurting yourself is fine, that you have to destroy something in order to feel ok. Every piece of skin you cut is a piece that's ruined forever. There is a better life for you.
