You can turn to a travel agency, the more diciplined ones so that you won't suffer from a rip-off just in case:wink:. They shall provide you a tour guide in major cities for about 200Yuan per day which is equal to around 25USD if you like. Or you can just buy a travel guide like Lonely Planet etc. in local book stores which is informative enough and you get the chance to know how local people live.

Make sure you check out those major cities as well as rural areas if you have enough time. My English teacher find the country side extremely intriguing and he had fun there communicating with the donkeys and pigs. The only problem will be, if you don't have friends who can speak Chinese you might have difficulties communicating with people in rural areas, but they are usually quite nice n hospitality so nevermind.

Have fun in China!

I went to China with my partner last summer, and we just took a travel guide book and a phrase book. Its not impossible - you don't HAVE to go round in guided groups. I would say don't book ANYTHING before you get there as its so much cheaper when you're there. If you have a guidebook such as Lonely Planet or Rough Guide you'll have a good idea of what things should cost and won't get ripped off The Chinese love to rip you off. Beware in particular Beijing airport - go straight through until you are outside, ignoring all the offers of cheap-sounding taxi rides - they are still 10 times too expensive. Go to the official taxi rank outside and pay the legal fare. Airport to City Centre taxi less than £10 - the touts will try to get you to pay £50. Underground trips 20p anywhere.

Calamityjane has it right (the second answer)

You will have a far better experience without the tours, and for far less money. In addition to the books she mentioned, you can check out: www.travelchineguide.com It's not as good as the book, but you can check it our before hand. You can also book hostel's with this site: www.hostelbeijing.com (the only site I would trust to book a place in China) Also, you can email me. I've been living and travelling here for a year and a half now, and I'll do my best to answer any questions. China is worth it, so make plans ;)

It has been pretty safe for Taiwanese to travel in mainland China for years, but as of right now, we're not sure about the latter. However, lately, a group of mainland tourists have arrived in Taiwan for the first time in history. I guess we'll find out soon whether it's safe or not for mainland Chinese to travel in Taiwan. ;)

when you land the airport, you can get the information from travel centre.

for preparation, you can buy a book is called " China by l onelyplaent" and read the book and go by back pack. or if u don't want to book everything advance, you can join a travel tour.

by the way, in China, except Hong kong, people don't speak English but mandarin, and safety can be another issue. so, think careful.

good luck!

contact china focus, go to their website chinafocus.com They are stationed in San Francisco and run tour group in China. I went with them a year ago for a 13 day tour in China all inclusive it was excellent and their tour guides both national tour guide and city tour guides are remarkably good. Perhaps they can help you.
GOODLUCK
