I was told it might be the "transformer" but not sure. Does anyone else know what else it might be and how much it would cost to fix? Thank you.

Are you in trouble? Call some places where they will give you an estimate. That would be your best bet.

I have worked on many of these RCA (GE is made by RCA) projections. in a couple of them I found they had arcing flyback transformers. if you listen in the back you can probably here it snapping at turn on. that is about a $250 to $300 repair. Next time buy a quality set and not the cheapest and you will avoid problems like this
