They were as uninformed on the issue as you apparently are.
Here is an assertion that can be backed up: The hypothesis (not theory) of evolution contradicts known scientific principles, for example, the 2nd law of thermodynamics aka entropy. Familiar with it? I'll bet you are. It says that the universe tends toward disorder and chaos, while the hypothesis of evolution says that the universe gets more and more complex all by it's lonesome. Hey! That's a direct contradiction isn't it? And don't give me the line about needing more time for evolution to accomplish it's end, the more time you throw into the mix, the more devastating entropy is. If the universe started as nothing, or a dot, or some dust, or any thing else like that it would still be that only more disorganized and chaotic. Know where I learned that? A biology textbook. I had to read between the lines a little but it is only common sense,

The pope is not God. Everything he says is not correct. People that are considered servants of satan do the things satan wants them to do. So by him saying that evolution is okay would be to going against God and His word. Funny how satan does not go for atheists that are useless to him, but people in the church who can corrupt other's faith

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Well, I'm not Catholic, so I can't say that any Pope has condoned the acceptance of evolution, HOWEVER--- Evolution was nothing more than a THEORY conceived by Charles Darwin, who, by the way, later discounted all of his theories of evolution as "impossible", and accepted Christ and Creation. NO BS

Peace!
Uncle Wayn gave a very good answer to your question. Actually what he said is the official position of the Catholic Church. Let me just add that by its unity and structure creation tells us that it comes from a Being of supreme wisdom and love. Belief in God does not contradict the findings of Science because God, who is Wisdom, cannot contradict the discovery of wisdom in the findings of Science.
Good day!

The Catholic Church has recognized that evolution is established science. It is also a proven fact. The Church got badly burned on the Galileo fiasco, and is now paying more attention to science.

They understand that the bible is metaphor in many of it's OT stories.
Don't forget how stupid they looked after jailing Galileo for pushing heliocentrism. Wouldn't that make you a little more cautious?

Because evolution does not necessarily contradict Scripture, nor does it necessarily preclude God as Creator. God can be the who, and evolution can be the how.

Are you nuts? Evolution is only a process. Who said God could not use that process to do what he did? Or, maybe he invented it. He certainly built us to be able to adjust to variable circumstances. - And that is just what evolution is.
