I think it is a very bad and potentially dangerous thing to do to have a computer in your teens room. I'm sure with all of the media attention recently, you have heard of all the child predators who go online and try to talk to young teens. Teenagers are curious and a bit too trusting of people they meet online. I personally think the computer should be in a common area of the house so the parents can be aware of whats happening. Better to be a bit overprotective and be safe than sorry.

It all depends on what standards you have set for your children. If you are concerned about your teen looking at pornopgraphy, then it wouldn't be a good idea. If you are concerned about your teen playing video games all day and all night, and being addicted to it, then it wouldn't be a good idea. If this is the case, then it's best to have a computer put in a family area where anyone can be at any time.

It depends on the teen.
If the teen can be trusted to be safe online and not devote all their time to computer, then sure-why not?
If the teen isn't really trustworthy and spends all day doing MySpace, IM, etc. then NO way.

I have a computer in my room and I do MySpace and stuff on it but I also write my stories and stuff on it. Plus, I don't spend all day on it. So, my parents are OK with my computer being in my room.

For my own home .. the Answer was NO (and DEFINITELY NO to Webcams too) ... and I did have the filters on, the internet security programs, and the parental controls (along with passwords and encryption so that they could NOT change settings).

I am very aware of all the predators and predatory things out on the internet, and being a Long-Term Single Parent, did NOT want this coming to my doorstep (literally) because any one of my teen/young adult children made the STUPID Mistake of identifying where they (and I) lived ...

I say no. Porn has a HUGE draw, and you wont be able to moniter it at all. Not to mention being able to moniter anyone that the teen is talking to over the internet, and that can lead to a lot of trouble, and heartache.

Keep the computer in a family room, or a very social room.

Yes, I believe it is okay because computers have become a part of our culture. They can be a helpful, educational tools. However, it is important to check the web sites your child has visited and warn he or she about the dangers of preditors who steal information and take advantage of young teens online. I believe with a few precautionary measures a computer in his or her room would be benificial.

nicely, i'm 21, yet at the same time as i replaced into an adolescent, my stepmom searched my room continuously. I hated it. I wasn't hiding something, yet I nonetheless did not like her being in there snooping. i experience that all of us (even little ones) are entitled to privateness, until eventually they offer a discern a good reason to flow snooping. I actual have determined I will by no skill search for my childrens rooms until eventually I easily ought to, operating example if i discover pot of their pocket or something. Even then, i visit refer to them about it first, and they are going to be with me when I search for the room. I believe you that there is not something incorrect with understanding what your little ones are doing. i imagine each discern needs to make it their accountability to carry close what their childrens are doing. it truly is strictly why i does not enable my baby to have a pc of their room. the computer they use will be interior the living room or different section the position i visit work out it and examine it without invading their privateness. something they are allowed to have of their room should be inner most. Evidence points to NO. Teens are curious and there's so much to see on the web. Even adults need to be cautious about what sites they visit.

Plus, we've all heard of preditors and our teens are very trusting. Why put your child in that position?

As long as you trust your teen and feel comfortable checking in when they are on the computer to make sure they aren't doing anything bad.

I've seen a few kids on line who actually put their image and full name online. That just opens them up to a lot of predators. I say no and I won't when my kids are teens.
