This truly depends on where you live. For instance, if you live in California, the free-insurance program called Medi-Cal will cover the birth completely. It will even cover birthing classes that get you a free car seat. BAM! Those things are out of the way. If you buy expensive clothing, then yeah maybe you'll spend $500 a month if you're coo-coo. The best thing you can do is throw a baby shower (if no one throws one for you.) You'll get things for all ages and stages of your baby's life. I bought a $140 crib that my 5 month old son doesn't sleep in because he likes his swing better. It just depends really. You can't quite put a set dollar amount on it. If you qualify for WIC, all your formula (if you will bottlefeed) will be covered until about 4 months of age, then you'll end up buying a little more than they give to you for free. We honestly haven't spent more than $200 a month on the baby. We get by pretty easily. Buy at big discount stores like Target, Walmart, K-Mart, or even Ross and Marshall's. You'll save a bundle....especially with coupons! lol Good luck :)

There are lots of factors
is the baby going to sleep in a crib or the family bed? is the baby going to be breastfed or formula fed? Will you use disposable diapers or cloth diapers? Do you have health insurance? Will you use jar food or make your own baby food? Are you going to buy brand new clothes or second hand? I could write a list, you can live frugally and still have a happy baby.

The minute you have your baby you will probably owe the hospital a big co-payment. From my personal experience you can count on spending anywhere from $500 to $1000 a month on baby related stuff for the first year.

Next time you're in the area...take a look at the price of diapers and formula. It's nuts !
But that's just a drop in the bucket....wait 'til they go to school.
It costs tens of thousands of dollars, 20 years of your life, 20% of your sanity and 12% of your self esteem.

And it's worth it all

10,000 for babys first year--that does not include what you spend in the hospital for labor/delivery -it also does not include any shots or doctor visits baby may need

6-8000 dollars a year after that until baby is school age.

i read that the average cost is $10,000 for the first year. Less if breastfed and they are definitely ways to save money; even books written about it.

On a tv report I saw they estimated for the first year $6000. Babies are extremely expensive.

I heard that it's over 100K to the age of 18, that doesn't include college.

A conservative estimate - $100,000 per child until they reach 18.
