My oldest son has moved out now but whenever he comes over for a visit my dog Misty is very afraid of him.She barks and hides and runs around like she thinks he is going to hurt her.He never has done anything bad to her.She just has never liked him.She growls at him if he comes close to her when she is in my lap and sometimes she will even shiver she is so scared. When my son still lived at home sometimes we would argue and shout.Do you think she remembers this and does not trust him?Why would she not be afraid of me to if that was the case. How can I get her to accept him and not be afraid. He comes over most weekends and stays with us and I dont want her to be upset by his visit.

It does sound like she has some anxiety issues going on and probably does associate him with chaos. She was probably an insecure puppy and the problems you had with your son is what you are noticing, but not the cause of her problem. Her fears and anxiety probably started before she came to your home. Dogs can adjust to dysfunction as long as they feel secure in where they are in the pack.

Cesar Milan "Dog Whisperer" has some excellent books and DVDs on fear and aggression in dogs. I also recommend books by Patricia B. McConnell. These tools will help you to help your dog become more confident and secure living in a human world. They'll help you understand more about yourself too.

Hey thats not very easy to resolve but by experience I know you can do it...here goes my story... I had a cute pom and was very close to him... then my brother got an Alsatian. called T. T hated me and did all that u described abt your dog doing with your son with me!! I am a dog lover to the core.... so I took great care and extra love and understanding of the matter... I would spend extra time with T give him treats and more so treat him at par with my Pom... So i think your son can try and be friends with her moreover plz dont argue with your son or raise voices at least when she is around.... Love can solve this however it will take time.... So be patient and all the best.... By the way T loved and trusted me most at the end even more than my brother and i was with him till the last moment :-( I still miss him....

Based on my past experience with dogs and cats, these animals do have some extraodinary sense to detect "human moods" or in this case, either your son does not like the poodle or it has detected your son's bad feelings against you, ;-)

Obviously you are blinded, your son has done something in the past, probably several times to get an animal to act like that. The problem here is human, not animal.

have ur poodle and ur son sit in the same room...even if the dog barkes, have ur son not move, not speak, not approach the dog....ur dog will eventually shut up and come around to realize that ur son doesnt want to hurt him, nor does he dislike him...give ur son some treats to give to the poodle too....

obviuosly he has done something to her or it may be just the tone of his voice, he has to win her trust over and this may take some time.
