I think I have your cats sister... in my basement... where she has lived for the past oh 4 years...

Some cats are just like that... she comes out when she thinks I am home alone or we are on vacation (i find cat hair all over the house).

I try to go down and spend time with her every day... but I can't force her to be with us...

Kittens in a litter tend to be varied. Some tend to be bolder and some tend to be more timid. Your cat's experiences have also probably taught him not to trust other people. Your cat wants to be loved and cuddled (don't we all) but the need for self-preservation comes first. I don't know how old your cat is and where you got him. Was he always this timid? Your cat's behaviour could also mean your family members don't really treat him well if he comes out when you are not around so he's learnt to keep clear of everyone until he hears your voice. Your dad doesn't sound like a cat lover so why would he bother if the cat doesn't come to him in the first place? You should take some time and see the house from your cat's perspective, especially when you are not home. It'll help you understand why he's behaving this way and what you can do to make him more trusting..

I have a cat who is twelve years old and none of my friends or family has ever seen him. If someone comes to my house he is zip under the bed.

I don't know why this is - I have had him since he was a six week old kitten. That's just his nature. When he is at the vet they always give him a blanket to hide under in his cage. No one ever mistreated him. I hope you stand your ground with your dad. You just don't "get rid of" a cat you have had for three years.

Well, if he's been that way for 3 years...there's probably no way that he'll automatically just start loving everyone. You can't tell him, "If you don't show affection, we're getting rid of you."

Has this 'everyone' tried offering him treats or played with him? That might help. Get out his favorite treat or toy and give that to the other person, yourself staying nearby so he doesn't percieve the situation as dangerous.

Animals, like people, have their own personalities. Your cat is probably very very shy, and may always be that way. Just be gentle and loving, and they will sense that. It may never be a "lap" cat , but it is lucky to have you !

He's part of your family now, Keep him and love him. More patience and cuddling can't hurt. Don't let him around people that don't like cats.

Get a dog. Cats could care less if you are there or not.
