This is David Poole from the charlotte observers idea.

"A driver should be given a 500-point bonus for his first win – not each win, just the first -- in the regular season and again in Chase. It would put the kind of emphasis on winning there should be in the Nextel Cup Series."

"The number scares people, but it could be 500,000 points and still have the same effect. Once two drivers have won, they’re competing against each other exactly the same way they do now. You could have 12 in the Chase and give 10 extra points for all wins and still use the bonus plan. All the bonus does is make winning the first priority for making and then winning the Chase."

So when Gordon wins, its 500 points... Then Jr. wins and he gets 500 points... now they are even...

Look, they already drive in circles, and this "new point system" would just go in one big circle too...

Besides 500 points is too much. What are you going to do when some driver that finishes in the top 10 but cant make the chase because 30 drivers are in front of him with a 500 point advantage... Racing should be a combination of consistency, and wins, not just wins...

I guess I just dont see the point.

Any system that allows drivers to score points from last place is ridiculous. What is this, the decathlon?

All serious levels of racing (then again, this *is* NASCRASH we're talking about, so it isn't) award points to no more than half the field, and usually only about a third. If NASCRASH averages 30+ cars per race, then there should be no more than fifteen scoring positions. MotoGP awards points for the top fifteen in this way:

1st = 25 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 16 points
4th = 13 points
5th = 11 points
6th = 10 points
7th = 9 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 7 points
10th = 6 points
11th = 5 points
12th = 4 points
13th = 3 points
14th = 2 points
15th = 1 point

It would be more than adequate for the adequate NASCRASH series.

You'll have to calculate for yourselves who would finish first (I wouldn't call him a "champion") as season's end, I can't be bothered.

I would like to see the points system changed. I think more points should be given for winning. I hate it when some drivers who never or hardly ever win are in the top five. I def. think the points system for the last 10 races should be changed. If a driver gets taken out and has a dnf, they are basically out of the chase unless they get really lucky the other races.

I say leave the points system alone, don't fix what isn't broken. I don't think David Poole knows what he's talking about when it comes to this issue, 500 points indeed, it might as well be 500 million, what difference does a few points make??? The one with the MOST points at the end of the race at Homestead-Miami - - - wins the Championship, what's so hard to understand about that ??? I say work on "the system" whereby MULTIPLE OFFENSE CHEATERS win races and get away with it, that's the problem that I see.

There are so many variables and scenarios. My first concern is the 5 points given for leading a lap. With the 3 and 4 car teams they take care of their team members and it just looks so phony. Award the points for leading four laps, not necessarily consecutive laps but any four laps during the race. I realize that multi-car teams may be "broken up" at some time in the future but there will be underlying loyalty ties either through sponsors or husband/wife team owners. It just comes across as phony, like the lucky dog winner. The sport is now run by the big-money sponsors so I expect more hokiness. Too bad, it used to be a true sport.

Just make it a requirement that you have to have a win to make the Chase. And I think the driver with the most wins that finishes out of the top 10, should be added to the Chase.

I don't Think that would work. What is So wrong with the Points sysytem in place now. When they first talked about going to the chase format a few years ago I was totally against it, But I have to admit that is has grown on me. I like it. I think it makes the last 10 races exciting. Don't fix whats not broken!

500 points is too much. Why should a fluke Casey Mears win have more of an impact than running consistant like Stewart, Kenseth, or Johnson. I agree you should get bonus points for winning but 500 is too much.

i think that they need to go back to the way it was back in the day this system is a joke nothing is written in stone and it all depends on the driver what is set in stone and what isnt all depends on how much behind you are willing to kiss there was nothing wrong with the old way it changed because of that damn jr trying to help him win which will not happen until he stops being a cry baby

Absurd and pointless. You just gave the reason why it is pointless. "Once two drivers have won, they’re competing against each other exactly the same way they do now." What does this do?
