If you ask Chinese citizens in China, 80 percent of them will say they are happy with their lives in China and don't mind Communist China.
If you ask Chinese people who live outside of China, 50 percent of them will say life in China is good but they are not sure if they like Communist China.
If you ask foreign citizens who live in China, 70 percent will say life is good, and it doesn't matter if it's Communist China.
If you ask foreign citizens who live outside of China, 80 percent will say they believe life in China is like hell and they are definitely against Communist China.
I am Chinese. My family and relatives of 20 plus members are Chinese who live in Canada. Almost all of us will say life is beautiful in China. Many of my relatives including my own family and myself would love to move back to China to work if opportunity presents. Half of us will say we don't mind Communist China as long as the majority of the people in China are happy with the current government.
You can have your opinion about China whichever way you want. It's not going to matter to most Chinese people. We Chinese always welcome friendly guests from other countries to see our country, to learn our culture, and to be friends with us. But we will not give a damn about any ignorant trash talking loser from any country. So if you don't want to come to the Olympics or even come to China just for a visit, that's perfectly fine with us. We don't need you anyway.

"Power comes from the barrel of a gun" ...and from brainwashing its citizens, which was another favourite of Mao's (and the current group)
As for what its like to live in China........ It's a Blast !!!!! You can't judge the people, culture and sites on the current goverment.
Besides, its a little more socialist then communist, and they are coming around on the human rights and environmental problems. Albeit slow in some areas, they already have higher restrictions on vehicle full consumption, and all the appliances for the home are more "energy friendly" then American standards. I'm not denying that most of the above is true to some extent, but alot is left out as well. China has changed alot in the past 57 years, so give it some more time. Things change, and not all roads lead to a war involving the US. I'd much rather live here in China then America.
Don't judge a place before you've lived in it, and/or know something about it. It seems to me that American goverment is one of the biggest propaganda machines the world has ever seen.... talk about brainwashing!!

I love life in Communist China. I'm a "waiguoren" (foreign country's person). I don't get paid a lot compared to other foreigners I know, but I can afford to go to the hospital when I need to. I can afford to travel. I've been to Korea twice and I'm going to Australia. I also go home to the states every summer. I've traveled to different parts of China. I buy pretty much whatever I want whenever I want to. It's safe. I can walk home from the bar, 30 minutes, at 3am and no one will bother me. I certainly wouldn't do that at home.
As for my Chinese friends, the only complaint I hear about the government, isn't about their government, but Western governments, particularly why it is so hard to get visas to travel or study abroad. However, I have co-workers from the Philippines and India that have the same problem as the Chinese getting visa approvals.
Those Chinese you do hear about protesting, generally don't want to change the government, but certain policies within the government. They are looking towards the higher ups in the government to curb the corruption at the local levels.

Those old boys may be thinking and dreaming of some scary sh#t, but they're on their way out.
The real question is, What do the young people of China think about Taiwan? Are they willing to engage in a war w Taiwan, with America?
Most young people have a more realistic view of the US than they used to. Any movie can be seen, any song heard, any site viewed. . .contrary to what the old boys think or try to block out. Most people just want to be middle class and make money, and they're smart enough to know that war is not the way.

Loved it. Wish I could've spent more time there. But alas, school started in the States and I was a bit reckless in spending...
But it's pretty normal if you're wondering, the only differences are really just cultural. If you think living there is like something out of 1984 (Orwell) you're dead wrong. And if you think everyone's out in the rice paddies, you're wrong as well. I don't think I saw any rice paddies. Although I did see a cute little vegetable garden atop my uncle's skyscraper.

I think it depends on where you live in China. Beijing, HK and Shanghai have a better life than the countryside.

Thanks "theshadow" for that remark. That is also one of the major reason why I would never visit China, or to attend the Olympic events over there in China.
