I'm into interior design and the choice would still depend on the user & who pays for it:
HARDWOOD - made of real solid wood, it vary in different types of wood such as Oak, Mahogany, Teak, blah blah...
PERGO - is a brand of LAMINATED flooring, it's a good brand & has diffrent classifications. some are for heavy traffic (commercial), it has label to tell you how long it will last (guarranty) - some for 10 years & so...
HOW TO DISTINGUISH:
hardwood are solid, you can feel it when you step or stomp on it, less "squeek". the grains are not as perfect as the PERGO, but more beautiful cause it's more natural. plus u can detect if it's PERGO if the edges has these profile (that's how it's called) somehow it's around the room on the edges & doors.
PROs & CONs:
HARDWOOD - a good investment IF you can afford it! and you usually has to wax &/or polish it every now & then. it will last for generations, but could cost you almost the same amount as your room... it takes weeks / months to install it.
PERGO - a lot cheaper, if you are just renting the place or don't have yet the money to get hardwood floor, you can easily remove the laminated flooring in just a click & then transfer it to wherever room you wanted. easy maintainance, just need a damp mop or cloth to clean it. easy installation, it would take hours to complete a room.
RECOMMENDATION:
of course ANYBODY WOULD PREFER HARDWOOD FLOOR and pergo is just an alternative to get that wood look!

Ill have to say, i agree 100% with answer #1, laminate floors are basically pressed paper with and hard laminate surface, its glorfied vinyl flooring. The edges chip easily, and they have a flat finish to them, wood is, just wood. Its 3/4" thick, its heavy, it dampens noise, and it can be sanded down and re-finished if you scratch it. I have installed both hardwood and laminte, personally i will never, ever, ever use laminate again. Its just plain junk when compared to hardwood.

Try bamboo flooring. it's pretty cool. laminate sucks but looks descent without the price tag. it doesn't dent or scratch so it's good if you have little tykes running around. hardwood will bring the value of your house up. however, it does get dents in it and will show wear or tear but you can usually re-poly them to help prevent that.

Laminate flooring is CRAP!!!!!!

I'm a conrtactor, and have had to remove dozens of 'floating" floors. They are horrible. Don't worry about being able to tell them apart....Ray Charles could have told them apart. Look at them side to side...you will see. But trust me on this....Pergo, Wilsonart, Armstrong, Congolium, Formica, are all terrible.

I don't want to offend anyone who has them, but in reality, a REAL hardwood floor is the BEST.

Almost all floors are hardwood, it would be hard for a carpenter to tell really. He could make a good guess.
