Take a positive training class somewhere, like Petsmart. They will help you teach her how to walk. Please do not try the choker collar first. There are a lot of no pull harnesses that help with that. Many dogs do well with them. Some, you do have to get to that point, but don't go there if you don't have to.

I know sometimes dogs can be difficult - I have a very stubborn chow chow. It is the duty of every dog owner to teach teach their dog how to behave on a walk. Dogs who never get walked get bored and depressed. It's like backyard jail.
I highly recommend reading Cesar's Way. Cesar is an amazing dog trainer. You can catch his show on TV - it's called The Dog Whisperer.

Obedience training tapes (i.e. VHS) are often available to check out at public libraries with Video Selections. They also probably have books on the topic. The spaniel is probably just 'playing' with you. It is up to you, the master, to help the dog learn to respect and obey your commands (with or without 'words'). Perhaps going somewhere else that she is less familiar to walk..such as a public park that allows dogs on leashes. Take her on a walk downtown. Sometimes the hustle/bustle helps them to realize that your 'commands' are for their safety. In other words, get her attention.
We used to travel with our Llasa Apso and took her with us to motels that allow pets. She is now deceased.
If obedience classes are offered through a community club or group, sign up. Often, it is an opportunity to meet new people and to share problems and solutions!

Well if you don't actually take your dog for a proper walk your dog can become lazy, over weight and lose muscle mass.
And did you say you have to carry him?! I watched an episode of Ceaser Millan about the same thing, maybe you should call him or take your dog to a obedience class.
Good luck! =D

Walking a dog is central to the realtionship between you and your dog. When you walk your dog, not only is he( or she) healthier, but through it he understand that you are the leader and they are the follower. Because you are struggling with this, you should watch The Dog Whisperer (Discovery Channel). Cesar Milan (Whisperer) uses walking a dog as the central technique to training and rehabilitating owners and their dogs.

You could try a retractable leash, where your dog can run a bit but she's still tied to you. Just be gentle and speak to your dog. She will understand by the tone of your voice what pleases you and what doesn't.

You have to walk your dog, because it is important for dogs to excerise and to have fresh air. I also have a backyard, what I do is I buy these things called doggie training pads, and put them in my backyard. My dogs always do their stuff in the training pads. I also try to play around with my dogs to increase our frienship and to keep them healthy.
