Yeah, that's normal.

You've got a bunch of things going on in your body and getting "weaker" is part of the progression. Part of it is minor muscle fatigue. Major muscle groups are made up of numerous muscles. Let's say you're doing squats. When you first start lifting - you can blast away as all your muscles are fresh, unripped, smooth muscles. Your smallest, weakest muscle groups are going to get fatigued, torn up and generally stressed. So your gluteous maximus, hams and quads may be going strong - but your lower back or some other part of you is crying "Uncle!". Give the parts some rest. Don't do the exercise every day. Make sure you do on a cycle where you're hitting the muscle twice per week. For example, do chest/shoulders/traps on Day 1, do lower body on Day 2, do back/abs/lats/arms on Day 3, Do your Day 1 routine again for Day 4, Day 2 routine for Day 5, Day 3 routine for Day 6 and rest on Day 7.

Also, expect long periods of plateaus. That's the way it goes in weight training. You'll max out at a certain weight (which I don't care about, I care about doing exercises 10-15 reps for upper body and 15-20 for lower body in PERFECT form. You'll find that you're doing the same weight for weeks, months, even YEARS and then suddenly you'll jump up. It's mysterious and everybody's body works differently. But hang in there.

Make sure you also check your ego. Maxing out on a single life and incorrect form/cheating is only going to get you hurt and really doesn't count. You're only cheating yourself. This is iron golf where your mind meets metal and makes the body respond.

If you want a little non-steroid help, I recommend creatine, coffee an iPod and a lifting partner. They'll blast you past your plateaus and get you stacking bigger weights. As a freshman in High School, I started at 125 lb. squats as a 135 pounder. As a senior, I was doing 315 10 times and 405 lb. box squats at 200 lbs.

Best thing to do if you are lifting at a gym is ask one of the instructors. They can answer your concerns better than we can. If you are not at a gym, then just go to one and look around like you may want to join and ask your questions then. You should also ask about running at the same time you are trying to bulk up. I ran like that and I got arthritis in my knees early because I did not ask an expert. These things are too complicated for us amateurs to answer when it is so serious a thing toward your future health. Thanks for asking though and for sharing this space with us.
