The previous answerer is a dope. It's a civil matter so they won't file an arrest warrant if you don't show. They will find in favor of the credit card company. The amount in dispute will be awarded to them which makes it easier for them to collect.
You really screwing yourself if you ignore this. You'll never be able to get a mortgage with a decent interest rate and many employers run credit checks before extending job offers.

Box815 is absolutely correct. Being served papers to go to court is a civil court, not criminal. If you don't show up, they will get a default judgement against you and can immediately move to take the money from your bank. They can attach your wages and take any other necessary measures to recoup their loss.
Go you court. Protect yourself as much as you can. You can try to make a deal with them to pay it back, but since it has gone this far, don't count on anything.

They will move for a default judgment on you. This will appear on your credit report for 7 years. It is really hard to win a case like this, but you could ask the attorney to file for a consent of judgment. This would allow you to go on a payment plan to pay the debt and this judgment does not go on your credit report. I am not an attorney so you may want to consult one to make sure that this is the way it works in your state. I know it works in MO because I've done it!

You need to talk to Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) right now. They will try to help you settle this... hopefully out of court.
If this goes to court, you will lose and it will be on your credit report for 7 years! This could also force you into bankruptcy and that will stay on your credit for 10 years!!
Call CCCS right now and try to work out a payment arrangement before it gets worse! Also, you will not be able to buy or refinance a house (if you already own one) until this is paid in full!! So call CCCS now! Or you will wish you did, later.
Good luck

I can't give you legal advice as I'm not an attorney, but generaly they can have multiple things done to you including you being forced to show up to trial with threat of beingarrested for failing to show up to trial, varies by state though.

its called failure to appear, you would then go to jail.
you would then have to pay cost of court, bail and lose your wages and still pay the bill, they can come after your house, car, wages, bank account.
so unless you have a bankruptsy number in your pocket, youd better go to court.

You would lose the case by default. Depending on where you live, wage garnishments and property liens are possible.
