this guy and i went to the movies and i considered it not a date because it was just a movie we both wanted to see, but he bought my ticket and he offered to buy me popcorn and drink. is he just doing this out of courtesy or did he get the wrong message and think it was a date?

I think it was not a date. It depends how he asked you. Even though he paid he could just be a nice guy. If you act like it wasn't maybe he will drop a few clues. Treat it like it wasn't but don't act awkward with him.
Good Luck

Generally if a guy pays for your ticket its a date.
Unless you know him well and the two of you do this a lot and trade off buying, but it sounds like you don't or you wouldn't ask. If you don't want him to get the wrong impression I'd offer him money for the ticket and tell him what your thinking.
P.S. I usually don't go to a movie with my boyfriend unless its something we both want to see.

The only way to know for sure is to ask him, he may have just been raised to be a complete gentleman. If that is the case, that is the kind of guy you would appreciate having for a date. If he says he thought you were on a date and you like him cool, if your not interested that way just tell him you really appreciate his friendship and respect him. That is one of the most important things to a man. Good luck and I hope I was of some help to you.

He thought it was a date. Why would he pay for the ticket AND offer to pay for drink & popcorn? It could have been courtesy but then again I don't know him.

if you make plans to do something together on a particular date of the month its a date because it was planned. If it was a spur of the moment thing its just 2 friends hanging out together. Or, its whatever you want to call it.

He SO thinks you were on a date. If you're not that in to him try to break him off gently. He's totally into you but he doesn't have enough confidence in himself to ask you (either that or he knows you're way out of his league and you scare him spitless). He sounds like a nice kid, try not to break his spirit.
