You can not totally rely on the registeries or offender laws to protect yourself or your children from possible harm from these people. Those registries are there for public information so that the public can see if there is someone living near you or in your community that could maybe be a hazard to your family.
It is then up to you, and/or the family unit to take the preemptive measures to protect the family from possible harm from those offenders. There are a lot of things that you can do to help make it safer situation for you and your children.
Another thing that makes the registry thing so hard to work, is the fact that when the offenders move, they are to report where they moved to within a certain amount oftime. You will not believe how many of these people there are that never report. They will move somewhere and not report, and so the registry system will not show where they are living. They could be living right next door to you right now, and you would not know if they did not go down and register.

The groupe ROAR for Freedeom, chich penned the article, openly states that their base includes "rehabilitated" sex offenders. This is surely slanted not to mention poorly written. The registry will not save all children. It isn't this nifty little wand that gets waved and "poof" all the sex offenders burn in hell and the little children are safe to play in their yard again. It is a measure to assist people in open awareness. It makes it so you know that there is a sex offender on your block or in the neighborhood you are planning to move to and assists you in making choices accrodingly. This does not mean that you should throw caution to the wind cause there is no Chester the child mollestor on your block because Chester may have not been caught yet. he could still be living next door. The list grows because sick people exist but if that list and more public awareness due to that list saves ONE child then that is enough for me. When you harm a child you lose your right to my concern, care and belief in your freedom. Personaly I believe that in most cases sex offenders should be locked away for life. Their victims will suffer the burdon of their twisted minds for the rest of theirs and I think it is only fair. I will state that I think there should be a distinction between certain "offences" and others. I don't think that the 20 year old guy who fell in love with his 15 year old girl friend and her parents got pissed off should be punnished the same way as the man who raped a 2 year old. I think the laws need some assistance in these areas. As for the sex offender registry, it is not a cure all but I believe it is a step in the right direction. As for this article, I feel for the child but I think the whole point of this article was to take the pain of this child and twist it to assist people that are the offenders. That's really disgusting.

NO, if they worked why are sex offenders still sliding through the system and moving within blocks of schools with gradeschool children, why are they ministers, why are they boyscout/girlscout leaders, why do they pass out candy on halloween, why do they go to public carnivals/fairs, childrens movies, and parents take their kids to the malls drop them off no big deal, I have had academic work in profiling and threat assesment I cant call all of them out but when you study behaviors of child predator, your skills become refined.
The CJ system has them register to protect their butts make it seem like they do work but you know what half of society doesnt understand the basics of what constitues CSC other than the obvious, and trust me law and order or csi, or as we call bsi, doesnt even scratch the surface of what takes place, so when you check the registry and you find the individuals SOR, and you see all this legal mumbo jumbo, you dont know whether the guy raped a woman, tried to, it's all very abstract on the registry, citizens dont know unless you physically call your dept within your city, or request/submit a FOIA letter to dept. of corr. or state police but anything thats criminal or in the LEIN, isnt open for teh publics eyes but you'd be surprised what is

They work somewhat as a deterrent...
They work better to keep innocents and potential victims informed about who's in their neighborhoods.
So...what would work better? The death penalty for sex offenders...
That would work the best in my opinion because it would ensure those convicted would never offend again.

Of course not. Those who made a one time mistake, like taking a 16 year old home from a bar, are unlikely to commit the same crime again anyway.
Sexual predators will commit more crimes not matter what list they are put on, so they should never be let out of prison.

well in pa where i live they post these petifiles on the internet on a site we can all access and it sshows their crime, age, picture, and street address. but the catch to this is if they dont register to vote in pa their excluded from this.however i think we're one step closer. theres about 70 ppl men n women listed on this site with a 100 mile radius of my home.yet that leaves i dont know how many that wormed their way around registration id just check to see if your state carries a petifile site you can view from ur own home
http://www.familywatchdog.us/
is a siite that covers nationwide just enter ur state and zip code and a map will show up click on the square you want to view and it will list details of petifiles in that area hope it helps

I think it is a great way to warn people of potential danger to themselves or their children
You have to realize that the rationale behind it is that sex offenders lack impulse control and will likely repeat their crime because there is something mentally wrong with them. They are predators.
Even if it doesn't work (and I think it does) I think sex offenders should at least be publicly humiliated in this way.

It would really help but the law enforcement agencys don't enforce it. They could care less about out childen. You have to protect them yourself. Its like keeping your children in jail but you know they will be safe. The judges I have read about lately should also be in prison along with the child molesters(if they even make it to prison). The judges hand down sentence's like 60 days in Jail (Judge Edward Cashman) from Vermont, another one in Missouri, the list goes on. I don't think the molester should get life in prison,I think we should just hang them, I don't want my tax dollars going to feed a pervert. Rope doesn't cost much. I would much rather pay for the rope.
