i plan to travel overseas this year for the first time in my life and I know that i need my birth certificate for a passport

The hospital won't have the records, the city/county clerk's office where your birth was registered, typically the city where your parents were living in at the time you were born.

Try the Department of Vital Records in your state capitol. Additionally, the copy needs to be certified.

Generally this would not be performed at a hospital anyway. The county clerk would generally handle providing duplicates. Be prepared to prove your identity!

Your State Dept of Health should have those records, not the hospital where you were born.
