You can definitely try to get over it without medication. You need to start slowly, and gradually build up until you can walk right through a crowded mall without feeling any anxiety at all.

The first step is just visualizing - imagine yourself in a small group of maybe 5 people, having a conversation, smiling, acting confident.

Once you can imagine yourself in a situation without feeling anxiety, try it in real life. Go to a video store or gas station or somewhere that there will be a few people, but not many. Act exactly the way you had imagined - smile and be confident. Remind yourself that nothing bad is happening to you, you really can go in public and be around other people. It will take some practice, but do not give up! Take a close friend with you if that makes it easier.

If you are having great difficulty, you can see a psychologist. They will not give you medication, but will give you some behavioural training to help you get used to being in crowds. They will also help you figure out what is causing the anxiety in the first place, and help you deal with that. If you are still not feeling any better, you might want to try medication just for a short period of time. When you are on medication it may be easier for you to practice being in small crowds, which in turn will help you realize that nothing bad happens when you are in a crowd, and might make it easier when you are no longer on medication.

I used to have this problem too in crowded places I would freeze unable to move and sometimes I would almost pass out from the fear my boyfriend would often be with me when I was in crowded places and that eased the fear more and more and after having time to adjust I am fine by my self, though still some very crowded places freak me out if I am alone, having a friend there will help you adjust, these things just take time, patience and a good friend to cling onto when things get rough. Work your way up so try going to places with friends like small markets then try more crowded places try and bring something to try and distract your self like music that helps relax you or talking to your friend about something irrelevant. Hope it all works out for you

I overcame some long time depression with a multi vitamin and a disolved mineral/aloe supplement. There are some products from the same company that have shown remarkable results in battling every mental ailment, high cholesterhol and infection. I'm sure in less than 3 months you would be able to go out in a crowd again without medication, most likely with more energy and health too.

I recomend seeing a therapist as well as using these great natural mineral supplements to make sure it a chemical problem and not a neurosis that will raise its ugly head elsewhere. Email me anytime for more help.

I think if you gradually expose yourself to crowds starting small then working your way up you will be OK. I used to and occasionally now get horrible anxiety about going to the doctors or the hospital to the point I wouldn't go no matter how sick I was. What helped me was prior to going relax sit down close your eyes and take long deep breaths. While you're doing that ask yourself why you are afraid of what you are afraid of and generally that makes you realize how irrational you are being.

I was on pills - Then had to get off because of side effects. I would get sick and extremely nervous going into crowded places. Know how I have overcome? I HAD to. Because of my husband's job, I have had to go into crowded places constantly. Kept doing it over and over and it has gotten where it isn't so bad now. If I were you, I would FORCE myself to do it and it will get easier over time. (I still get nervous but it is manageable and I get over it quickly now)

Follow your docs advise, however, you could still try a place at a time. Like learning to walk all over again, one step at a time. Good luck.

Not me, I need pills for panic attacks--particularly in crowds.

Some people have come out of it with therapy--there are free and sliding-scale clinics--give one a call.

If that's your only phobia and you feel no anxiety in any other situations, you might want to look into a self-hypnosis-type program.

Meanwhile, you can try calming herbs like chamomile, kava-kava, valerian or passionflower.
