I moved out of my mom's house 9 months ago so I haven't seen our cat Tigger for awhile and when I did it was for a few minutes and then I would leave. Well I just got a new place and decided that I would like to have the cat since my stepdad made it live in the basement which was not for living conditions. I've known my cat since it was a kitten and now it's 9 years old. Well today my mom and sister dropped him off, and since they've left, he's just hiding under my bed. He came out for a bit to check things out but he doesn't seem to recognize me. He'll rub on my leg but won't let me pick him up, but the cat lets my bf pick him up and they've just met. I feel bad and have the feeling Tigger thinks he was sent to strangers. How do I get him to recognize me again, or does he recognize me and he's just getting to know my bf now? Will he eventually get used to the new place?

It takes a few days for a cat to get used to new people and new surroundings, particularly if it is as old as yours and set in its ways. Your cat may also be a little angry with you--after all, the cat doesn't understand what people have to do to get along, he just knows, hey, you left him and his feelings may be hurt. Cats generally don't like change. Just love him, be patient, and in time (hopefully) he will warm up to you again.

I dont think he's forgotten you. He might be a little freaked out about the circumstances (being left alone, liing ina basement, brand new apartment). Your bf might just be a more interesting thing to smell, like from his meat-wich or other pets.
It will take time to your cat to adjust to you. What i suggest (having done this with pretty good success) is leave the cat in your room at night, with water, and the door closed, so all her attention is on you. Of course make sure kitty used the litter box before, thought marking up a place might make the pet feel more at ease.
Good luck. I know the pain of pet not remembering me...

I live away very far away from where I grew up. I go back home about 3 times a year for no more than a week. When I go back, the cats ignore me all the time for the first few days because they are "mad at me" as my parents say, and after this they warm up.
I think it is similar as to when you go on vacation and your cat ignores you when you come back for the first day or two.
Anyways, I wouldn't worry, he will get used to you in the next few days. He is just nervous and upset at being moved to a different place.

Love and hug as much as he will allow. Get Kitty healthy treats, if he likes them. You know cats have "their own life". Patience is a virtue with kitties. Given he's a male, and 9 yrs old, I think he will come around. ONLY, if he doesn't feel the green monster in your mind over your boyfriend. Kitties can feel those bad vibes. You want to make sure that you only have love around him AND your boyfriend. I imagine you feel left out of your childhood buddy to your boyfriend. Realize the cat is just a cat, love the cat, and your bf, and things will fall together. Hey, if your boyfriend loves you, and you love the cat, it will all work out because you will have both your loves in your life.

Give the kitty time...it will come around. In a few days it will probably act like it owns the place. Give the kitty some space and affection when it approaches you. Don't push it on the kitty. They are horrible with change and this is difficult on an older cat. Just allow him to adjust and soon he will be ok. :) Good luck. :)

Most likely your cat just needs to get used to his new environment. He probably recognizes you, but is scared about the new home.
I've moved from apartment to apartment with my cats and it usually takes them about 3-5 days to get back to their normal routine and to be relaxed. Make completely sure that you've made him aware of where the liter box is and where the food and water is. He will come around eventually.

I think maybe he is just stunned by another change in it's life. I bet he just needs time to settle down. If you still had things at your moms house when you moved out maybe your smell might still be on it and so chances are he hasn't forgotten you if your scent was still lingering around.
