What's your reason for asking? Curiosity or cursing?

Estimates by reputable agencies say the non-religious total as low as 5% (15 million) and as high as 16% (48 million).

Some of these sites are atheist sites, but they contain references to unbiased sources through which the facts can be checked.

Let's not forget that in the US, atheists are the _least_ likely to be divorced (so says the fundy christian Barna Group) and the _least_ likely to be incarcerated (so says the US government's Bureau of Prisons).

And remember, the people who flew the airplanes into the World Trade Centre on 9/11 believed in the same "god" that christians do; they were NOT atheists.

Depends upon the survey but probably about 15% atheist, agnostic and no religion combined. 15% of 300 million works out to 15 million nonbelievers in the U.S.

The American Religious Identification Survey of 2001 reported 29.4 million or roughly 14.1% of Americans "identifying with no religion." 90% of all adults believe in God, according to the Harris Poll of 2003. The sites are linked below.

According to the CIA world factbook:

Protestant 52%, Roman Catholic 24%, Mormon 2%, Jewish 1%, Muslim 1%, other 10%, none 10% (2002 est.)

That's about 30 million people.

Sounds low. I heard from 3% to 25% in different studies. I think that a lot of people dont spend time thinking about religion and God. They just go with there parents. I know a lot of Christian who just go to church on weddings and funerals. I think if more people spent time thinking and reading about it we would have more Atheists.

A Christian researcher named Barna conducted a survey in 2004 that found 12% of the US population was atheist or agnostic. We currently have just over 300,000,000 people, which leads to the conclusion of about 36,000,000.

Again the***PRAYNOGRAPHER***must set things straight. All people are born Atheists. Then are brain manipulated to believe what their parents have been told what to believe. Then like a bad habit it has been passed on from generation to generation, because it is just easier that way. Again all are born of innocence of bigotry and hate, until religion is installed into their minds, like the branding of cattle or horses. The***PRAYNOGRAPHER***believes in the Separation of Church and Brain.

Gazoo is right. The polls lump the atheists and the agnostics together. It makes it hard to tell. So it's best to say 'nonreligious' when referring to it.
