Grapes take about 100 days from flowering to picking. The vintage (name for harvesting the grapes) takes place from mid August through October in Italy and the rest of the northern hemisphere.
Grapes intended for wine will be checked for ripeness -- there is a simple handheld tool that will measure the amount of sugar in a grape; from that it is easy to calculate the alcohol level that can be produced.
When the grape will reach the correct ripeness for picking depends on a number of factors including weather during the year, the grape variety and the location, e.g. vines in valleys usually ripen earlier than those planted up hills where it is cooler.
If you are in Italy in September through October you will almost certainly see grape harvesting taking place in the country side.

In the Northern Hemisphere (including Italy in Europe) the grape harvest usually happens in late August - early October depending on type of grape, location and amount of recent sunshine. It's not a totally exact science.
In the Southern Hemiphere it would be Febrary/March time.

Some regions in Italy have a warm weather all year Long.Like California or Florida. So,the grapes are there for ever.Some places like Cicily the weather is cold and the grapes have a short season.Is not grape-time in there.Is region time.
