Due to the fact that it is hot it will leave a burn mark. Which will be black on your table. So unless you do this in several spots and make a pattern, it's probably not a good idea. You shouldn't even put hot pans or pots on a counter top as it can leave a burnt mark as well.

In nature, things go from more to less.
In saying so, the pan's heat would transfer to the table, causing either it's finish to melt or the wood to burn.

You can but it will mar the surface or if finished it will melt the shellac/varnish - it is best to use a trivet or cutting board to absorb the heat and protect the table.
