How do I stop them from happening? I usually get them when I am lying down and stretching. I would also like to know the cause.

it could be a number of things

-low potassium or low calcium levels in your blood
-dehydration
-pulled or strained muscle

you can try applying a heating pad to the areas that are hurting for 10-15 mins at a time to help alleviate the pain. do not apply the pad directly to your skin (to avoid burns) and never sleep with one.

take ibuprofen to help with the pain too. take 200-400mg every 6 hours as needed but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.

if this continues for longer than 3 days, and/or is keeping you awake at night-make sure to make an appt to see your dr. the only way to determine if your calcium or pottasium levels are too low is through blood work

good luck to you

Are you taking any fluid pills? This can cause potassium to leave the body. If lab test shows this is reason for leg cramps, start eating sweet potatoes and bananas.

I don't know the exact cause, by I do know that dehydration can be a cause of muscle craps. Try increasing your water intake.
