Ive been a mechanic for forty years and the two most impressive cars for durability were the ford escort and the mercury tracer,my kids had escort and they had 250 thousand miles on it when they sold it.My mom had one also and she loved that car.My sister in law had a tracer and she also put over 200 thousand miles on hers.Always have a good mechanic check out the car unless you know how to.Good luck!

I'll second the Ford Escort vote, those things run for ever, just not much to look at. My sister had one that got well over 250k miles on it and sold it to another person who drove it for at least another 3 years.
More likely to find something about 15 to 20 years old or older for that price range, lots of older vans or 2WD trucks sell for that price or less, they just look terrible. Also some older full size cars and vehicles like a Dodge Dynasty can be found at those prices, they won't be pretty, but you probably don't expect pretty for $800.
These lower priced vehicles usually aren't advertised in the paper since they don't expect to get much out of them. I once bought a good running car for $75 because the people selling it just didn't need it anymore. It was rusted in the quarters and had a few dents, but it ran good. That was back in '94, but deals like that do still happen once in a while, just not in the classifieds or on ebay or anywhere like that.
Drive around your town and look for "for sale" signs on some vehicles parked in people's yards, or some parking lots seem to attract vehicles people are trying to sell. Those are usually the best bargains to be had.

maybe 5 year old would be ok but not 10 the best is gone out of it .you'll have nothing but someone else's problems .and good luck if you can get anything under 10 years for $800.

first off you probably wont find a car that is ten years old and cost 800 dolllars, try like 15 years old and look for anything honda, they are the best cars to get that are that old. your best bet is to save up some more money try like 1,500-2,000 and try and get a car that is about 6 to 7 years old and you will be much better off.

That is probably a fantasy.
However, you might want to check with your local Salvation Army.
Sometimes they sell donated cars.
