She painted a lot- I'm not sure of an exact number, but she has definitely impacted current art. She gave a voice to female surrealism and to women in general. Her self-portraits are scincere and reflective in a way that caught people's attention. Although she was scarcely acknowledged in the US until the 1970s, her legacy picks up from there. As more artists learned about her, her influence spread. Part of what made her signifigant is that she, unlike her husband, Diego Rivera, did small easel paintings. Diego believed that large-scale murals were the future of revolutionary art, but she painted small, introspective pieces, like her many self-portriats. These images say more about society and more to society than Diego's large, bombastic murals ever did. With her self-portraits, Frieda was riding a wave that would engulf the twenty-first century. Now we are all about what we, individually have to say, not what the society has to say as an undifferentiated mass. I mean, the site we're all addicted to is called "MySpace", not YourSpace or OurSpace. We are a generation of self-portraitists, demonstrating our world's issues through our own small, individual lenses.
