My daughter has to have a Hysterogram. I know basically what it is (examination of uterus), but are there any females who've had it done and can explain how it is done? Or, if any nurse or gynecologist can explain the procedure I would appreciate it. Thanks.

WOW Thank you both so far that's great advice. Now another question, the gynec said she was going to do it in her office so my daughter would be more relaxed instead of having a tech do it (we have beaucoup male techs). Will the office procedure be different? YOU GUYS ARE GIVING ME A WEALTH OF INFO THANKS.

hys·ter·o·gram (hst-r-grm)
n.
1. An x-ray of the uterus, usually using contrast media.
2. A graphic record of the strength of uterine contractions during labor.

How the test is performed:
You are instructed to lie on a table in the radiology department and pull your knees to your chest. This is called the lithotomy position. A speculum is then inserted into the vagina , and the cervix is cleaned.

A catheter is inserted through the cervix, and dye is injected, filling the uterus and fallopian tubes. The dye makes the genital organs and their cavities more visible with an x-ray , which is then performed. Any abnormalities are noted.

How to prepare for the test:
Fecal material in the bowel can obscure the genital view necessary. For this reason, your health care provider may give you laxatives to take the night before the test. Sometimes an enema or suppositories may be administered the day of the test. Your health care provider may also supply sedatives to help you relax during the procedure. Be prepared to sign a consent form before the test begins and to wear hospital clothing. Often the test will be scheduled in the week following your period, to ensure that you are not pregnant during the test.

now depending on how old she is, there are links here that show you age specifics

good luck !

She will be in the same position as for a pap smear. They will use a speculum. A catheter will be put into the uterus and a tiny balloon will be inflated. Contrast (dye) will be injected through the cervix into the uterus and x-rays will be taken to see if there is a blockage in the fallopian tubes. They look to see if the contrast spills out of the tubes into the abdominal cavity.

Where I've worked, a male tech would not do this procedure. And to be honest, I'm not sure if it's different at the doctor's office - sorry :(

I had this procedure done when I was 25 and to be honest with u,and I don't know if it is just me but as the dye went through it was horribly painful! But the good news is as soon as I got home I popped a couple of panadeine and I was right as rain.
