Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Saturn, Nissan Sentra. They are reliable, safe, inexpensive. Look at the mileage, the lower the mileage the longer the vehicle has left in it.

I had a Pontiac Grand Am (1994) when I was 16. Well 17, but that was 7 yrs ago. It ran ok, but bit the dust about a 1 1/2 yrs later...but it was a bit older.
I would have to say that a 1995-2000 Honda would be a superb choice. I drive a 97 accord and it runs real well and has great gas mileage. They arent tooooo expensive and last a long time.
Hope that helps! :)

Dodge Dakota pickup truck (pre-1996). Low insurance, reliable, solid frame, likely to still be driveable after any small fenderbenders. Don't worry about gas mileage, the worse the better for a teenager so they don't drive too much.
Just fatherly advice.

Any year Ferrari or Lamborghini. A Bentley or Rolls Royce wouldn't be bad either.
