First go to a real piercer at a shop, not one of your friends not some place in the mall. Make sure the places health card is up to date. Make sure you see the needle come out of a pack, and the jewlery is steril. Every time the piercer touches something that is not steril they should change gloves. Make sure you get pierced with a needle and not a stud gun. Follow your piercers directions (unless they tell you to use neosporin or rubbing alcohol. Neosporin says right on its packaging not for use in puntcture wounds and rubbing alcohol promotes scar tissue growth as it kills new cells as well as bacteria) ask about sea salt.

Any piercing that you don't keep clean will get infected. Just keep it clean and move the ring or barbell several times a day. With mine, after a couple of weeks of cleaning it with saline solution and rubbing alcohol, I'd take the barbell out and clean it with some neosporin on a cotton ball, then wipe down the top and bottom of the piercings and put it back in and kind of work it back and forth. It healed up just fine.

I got mine pierced and never got an infection. Just take good care of it and listen to what the piercer tells you! Just don't irritate your piercing and sweat a lot around it. If you do get an infection just clean it without probing it so roughly.

I worked at a tattoo shop....they are easily infected and take the longest to heal. Clean the site with dial soap 3x a day. Don't wear pants that will rub it, and you should be fine.

I cleaned mine every day and moved it around, and I STILL got an infection. I really considered taking it out but I decided not to and it healed up perfectly.
