I can't seem to get a good singing voice that is steady and has good clear tone. Any suggestions of techniques or exercises would be appreciated.

I can't afford voice lessons.

URL is wrong! I left out part of it. This one is correct:

The URL is incorrect. General suggestions still welcome, though I took lessons and that helped a lot

Breathing is very important to singing well. Although it may sound silly, are you breathing correctly? Lie down on your back and put a book on your stomach. When you breathe in, the book should rise. If it does not, you are not breathing with your diaphragm. Practice until you do; no one can tell you how to do this, you just have to work until you can. Once you are breathing with your diaphragm naturally, you will find you have an easier time sustaining your notes for longer.

If you're an alto or soprano then try the old honey trick......pour some into a cup...heat it up...and pour some lemon drops into it and drink up...wait 5-8 minutes and practice some scales....preferably start with major and switch to the same scale except in minor....for example....do the CM once in ascending and descending order and as soon as you finish it, start the Cm scale in ascending and descending order....also....try to drink lots of water before and after you sing and drink something hot before you go to sleep so that your throat doesn't dehydrate and your sound becomes smooother and clearer...feel free to e-mail or im me if that doesn't work...sing away!!

I sing...if you can't afford singing lessons you should get a good vocal training book or computer program to exercise your vocal chords..they are a muscle like any other.

The more you sing and the more you practice the better you will get.

If you are a smoker, quit, I am trying now, because the guys in the band are telling me i am getting raspy. also if you get phlegm try drinking something citrus, it seems to cut the phlegm a little bit. other than that practice a lot, and try some more varied voice exercises.
