Today at lunch, for the first time in my life, I made my own BBQ to go with my chicken. The sauce was very good, It would make a delicious rib sauce. Its really "sweet and tangy", but i'd like it a little more "smoky" for steak.

The sauces ingredients consist of...

Ketchup
Vinegar
Pepper
Sugar
Worcestershire sauce
Onions
Garlic

What can I cut back on, add in, or substitute so I can make it "smokier"?

Thank you.

I'd add a little chipotle sauce. You can find it at stores that carry Mexican food.

Check out these two websites. They will certainly get you going on the right track:

Try adding to your recipe a bit of liquid smoke. It comes in a bottle similar to worchestershire sauce. I always make my own bbq sauce. It's easy. Good luck and remember to go easy on the smoke...a little goes a long way.

Paprika is a key ingredient in many BBQ sauces, and it is described as being smokey in flavor. It is also an orangish color so it won't mess up your color. You may try liquid smoke, but use caution because it is strong.

Add cumin. Also, you may want to add chipolte pepper in adobe sauce. It is spicy so use a small amout. These two ingriedents should give it a nice hint of smokiness!
