I have a 92 nissan maxima and wanted to put wider tires on it do i have to buy different rims because i want them to look fat

Not a good idea, since I've been there and done that. What happens is the tires will tend to roll. The steering gets erratic and gas mileage goes way down. Changing the rims to match the wider tire is a better choice but will still affect the sterring. Fuel for thought.

Depends on how "fat" you want it to look. You can go a bit wider with the OEM wheels, but not too much before it is too wide to be safe. Try your local tire center for better help.

Probably safer to invest in rims with offsets that will allow you to put fatter tyres on.

Just go to http://www.tires.com and they have tire sizeing calculator that will tell you what tires will work on your vehicle.
