my mom got a very high strung, hyper male jack russle for x-mas and decided he needed a play mate so she went and got a female. the day after she brought the female home, it got sick. the vet said it has parvo. 3 or 4 days later, the male, the healthy one got sick too and now he is very lathargic and cant even move! the vet has been giving him IV fluids 2 times a day with antibiotics and lactos ringers in it and he still isnt doing very well. he has an abcest on his mouth and hasnt been able to keep any food or water down for 6 or 7 days. is there anything else we can do for him? are we being cruel by trying to keep him alive? HELP PLEASE! my mom just lost a 12 year old dog to diabetis and i dont think she can handle another loss so soon and she doesnt want to just give up on the puppy but she doesnt want to make him suffer either!

The dog needs to be hospitalized so it can be on iv fluids continuously and have the necessary medications given more often. Your vet may need to give the puppy plasma to help as well. These things need to be done in the hospital
Even with hospitalization, parvo can still be deadly, but the chances of survival is greatly increased with continuous supportive care. It is important to know that even if the pup does not die from parvo its immune system is so severely weakened it is wide open to other infections (like the mouth abscess) which can cause death in this weakened state.
Parvo is preventable with vaccinations. Its a hard lesson to learn, but always be sure your pups are fully vaccinated before exposing them to other dogs or places where other dogs have been.

Parvo is a difficult one.......the most important thing right now, is what your vet is doing, the IV fluids....he should be given small amounts of soft food to see if he can eat it. I had a doberman that got parvo pretty bad......cost a fortune in vet bills, but he did make it. The survival rate for parvo is 50/50. I hope this all works out, jack russells are great dogs.

I'm so sorry. The same thing happened to me. I had 2 puppies, a rottweiler/german shepherd mix who was SO sweet and quiet and just a great little puppy, and a husky who was also just a perfect dog. My grandmother brought her dog here who had parvo (she didn't know, because he was vaccinated so just had a tiny case of it, not fatal to him). Both of those little puppies got it, and they had not yet been vaccinnated because we didn't have them very long yet, and they both ended up passing away unfortunately. We took them to the vet but it was unsuccessful. They were there about 2 days before they finally just went. It is worth trying to save them, because they can definitely be saved, but I'm sorry to say it isn't very likely for them to overcome it. I really hope your puppies do get better though, because I understand how hard it would be for your mother and for you as well. But just remembe to keep your animals vaccinnated, because you never know and as they say... better safe than sorry. I wish you loads of luck.

And if the worst does happen and you lose your puppies, don't bring another dog into the house for about a month, because the disease can stay alive outside of the body for up to that long, and you definitely wouldn't want a repeat. And clean the house thoroughly. Parvo also has a smell when the dog gets sick, so you might want to keep an eye on that. Again, I wish you the best. Stay positive.

Puppies can survive parvo. Sounds like you got treatment early. As far as keeping up treatment, if you have the money, I would!

Also, incubation for Parvo is 7-10 days. You need to contact the breeder of the female and ask for at least part of your medical bills. If they refuse, and your puppies are registered, I'd contact the group and report them (IE. AKC, UKC, CKC). You could also take them to small claims court to get the medical expenses back on her. The male is another matter. He was exposed in your home.

Good luck on your puppies...I hope and pray they do well!

You are doing just about all you can do. Animals that get Parvo that are going to die from it usually do so within the first few days. If they were to die now, it would probably be from dehydration. If your male dog was vaccinated, he shouldnt have gotten it. AND whomever you got the female one from should have been responsible enough to have her vaccinated. One of the vaccinations that dogs are given is a DA2LPP (Canine Distemper, Adenovirus 2, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza virus, and Parvovirus). Another is Rabies, and Bordetella.
Do yourself and the dog's a favor and have them properly vaccinated, spayed and neutered. And keep up on their yearly vaccinations.
I wish you and these poor dogs luck. Ive nursed a parvo dog back to health, so I know what a huge ordeal it is. Keep doing what you are and hopefully they will pull through. Giving up on them and having them euthanized would be cruel.

Are the dogs at the vet's in isolation especially from each other, because from what you just described the female was sick and got him infected and i am having a really hard time believing that the vet sent your male home! Talk to you vet and get their professional opinion, that is what they are there for, and if it doesn't sound right call another vet and get their opinion. Tell them EVERY-THING that you have written here and see what they say (that is if the vet sent your male dog home) but it sounds like if he is in that bad of shape the kindest thing to do is to put him out of his misery.

They can still pull through. My uncle had a couple dogs that got this and he took them to the vet and now they are fine. Best wishes.

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind,
It's very sad when these things happen we had to put down our Tenterfield Terrier at 4 y/o because of a spinal injury , they may be alive but are they in pain?
