How do you deal with a father that is so grumpy and hateful to EVERYONE? He hates everyone and everything,, just a hateful person. He is 60 and is just so full of hate. I have tried talking to him and suggested counceling and i may as well had saved my breath...any suggestions?

There must be something he likes... a favourite TV program maybe? An old TV show? A piece of music? A topic of conversation? A favourite beer? A favourite dinner?

Start from the ground up. Find something he likes, and do/share it with him and try to talk to him whilst he is 'enjoying' this single thing. Be patient wih him. Is he sad because he has lost a loved one, or missed out on something in life? No one hates without reason. More importantly, don't let his hate affect you like it is doing. Love him more instead. It may drive you crazy, but feeling resentment towards him will only allow him to hate more. He is a 60 year old man who may be feeling scared due to his age, due to any health reasons etc... Just take some time out with him. When he says something hateful, start thinking of him being a loveable old rogue instead, and let him know it, to know that his hate is being wasted.

I'm sure you feel exasperated, but we all get tested from time to time. Maybe he had a bad upbringing. Maybe he is frustrated. He clearly has something on his mind or needs to get something off of his chest. Stop listening to him 'hate', and start working on why he feels he has to be this way.

I become more and more convinced that some people at about the age 55-60 just lose their minds. Personally, I would just ignore him and move on. Don't add that negativity to your life. I know it sounds harsh, but do you really think something will change?

People like your Father may wind up bitter and alone as he heads into the last years of his life. And you know what, that may be exactly what he wants. I wouldn't push it, don't say much to him or do anything for him and see if he comes around, If not, it may just not be in the cards to change him.

There is something that has made him this way a lose or a failure you just need to be there for him and try to help him.
