The two places that are consistently rated as the best by various city publications are Lombardi's on Spring Street and Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge, although those two tend to get a lot of hype because they are the oldest and part of pop culture. The truth is, since there are 50 pizza places on each block in NYC you can walk 5 minutes in either direction and have both the best pizza and the worst pizza you've ever tasted.

it's all a matter of personal taste...some people like really saucy pizzas, some base it on the crust and etc. i say go and eat at all the pizza places and judge for yourself. my personal favorites are dany's pizza in kew gardens on lefferts blvd in queens...nice thin crust, sauce on the sweeter side and the pepperoni is nice and brown...that and slices are huge and the loavable, but cranky old italian lady who works behind the counter sometimes likes to butt slap the pizza boys working the dough and the ovens...quite entertaining when you are sitting there.
in the city after i am done clubbing or a night of heavy drinking i always end up at this pizza place i don't know the name of or the exact location. it's in somewhere in west village near fat black pussycat around the corner (a few blocks from west 3rd st. and 6th ave). the cheese is great, the sauce is perfect and the crust is nice and thin...you could eat 4 slices easily. but then maybe that's because i was drunk and everything tastes good. maybe i need to go there one day when i am sober to see if it is really good. anyhoo, hope this helps.
