Focus on self improvement by focusing vigilantly on this present moment right now, do not concern yourself on ideas and fears about the future, nor constantly reminiscing about times gone. (There is no guarentee that we will finish living out this day, so we must make the most of every moment to make it count by helping others and spending time in contemplation and self research/study). Aim to bring about changes step by step, and when you do remember that these goals are often not going to bring lasting satisfaction, and failure may lead to sufferings. Goals must be achieved from within, such as conquering anger and greed.

In Christianity, if you cannot take riches with you to heaven, why do you want them?
Goal do not have to be material and in reality, to reach a state of perfection in Buddhism you need to let all attachments go, which means hat you cannot have any goals. For we that are less than perfect we set goals which we believe will satisfy our own personal needs. A goal such as "To do better next time" does not require any permanence to be achievable nor does a goal such as "to build a better house". Impermanence only affects goals which we hope to last for eternity. So any goal with universal, ultimate, eternal within it's definition isn't going to work. This isn't really a Buddhist concept alien from experience, only a reflection of reality.

Impermanence indicates that there is no eternal bliss, because even a joyous state will eventually cease and become suffering.
According to the Sutra, humans have three supreme characteristics. These characteristics are not only better than animals, ghosts and beings in the hells, but they are also better than the Devas in the heavenly realms. What are these characteristics? They are morality, knowledge and steadfast determination. In the human world, we know about suffering and are able to help those who suffer. But morality, knowledge and human determination is sometimes not completely satisfactory. It has its side effects’ sometimes including a tendency for humans to self-destruct. But through these three qualities, human beings are able to develop a sophisticated culture. This is a fact that cannot be denied.
Life is meaningful. Not only should we discover its worthiness, we should also realize its ultimate significance- mindfulness, wisdom & compassion.
