I can only speak for Illinois law.... In the case of signage there are some signs that are enforceable automatically on private property for example: handicap spaces ( which require a sign labeling the spot and paint markings on the ground. If any one of those 2 are not present an Officer shouldn't write a ticket ) Fire lane violations are enforceable if they are marked as such. As for stop signs people sometimes forget an owner of a private property can make arrangements with local law enforcement to have them enforceable. It’s similar to drawing up a contract. You find this in many malls. When a contract is tendered by an agency , said agency almost always recommends the signs be of legal size and height. They must be clearly visible / unobstructed to the direction of traffic it is intended for.

The property owners put up these signs so people of reasonable intelligence will undersand that there is a reason for them, even a need for them. No, you probably don't have to stop at them, but if you don't and you cause an accident, you can be citied for either a stop sign violation, or reckless operation on private property. A stop sign is also called a traffic control device. disobey it and see what happens.

I work for an attorney. Those are suggestions and bc it's private property the city does not have any kind of regulation of where the stop signs are put. When we handle accidents in parking lots its usually irrelevant as to whether or not there are any signage or anything in the parking lot. This is florida law i would suggest looking into your state's laws but this is pretty standard for all states.

you must stop at ALL stop signs, no matter where they are located or how big they are. Some parking lots and streets have yellow cones with stop signs on top of them in the middle of the road -- gotta stop at those also. also remember that in most areas you must also stop at all crosswalks when a pedestrian is trying to cross, even if the crosswalk is in the middle of the street and even if you don't have a stop sign

Technically no, you don't. I know we will not do any sort of stops, accident investigations, etc in a parking lot on private property. People call in accidents in Walmart parking lots all the time. Usually it is someone backing into someone else's car. We will go to the scene, and advise the people to exchange information and the sort, but will not do any sort of report.

Of course this is in Texas, what happens in your neck of the woods may be different.

stop signs are placed for a reason. generally to protect you and those around you. failure to obey stop signs usually results in an accident of which can expose you to criminal and/or civil charges. either way you risk more by not stopping than you'll gain in saved time. remember actions have consequences. be careful and be safe.

yes you do
and because it is private property they don't have to conform to the state regulations for sign size
