Someone told me my Office-XP program probably has a similar spreadsheet program, so how do I get my program to communicate when someone sends me an email with this ".xls" attachment? The 'help' says I need Microsoft Excel, does this really mean I need to spend more money putting an old program on my new computer? Sorry if this is elementary, but the boss really would appreciate me figuring this out.

XLS files are "eXceL Spreadsheets". So yes, Office XP will open them...if you don't have it, and just need to look at the file, Excel Viewer will let you see it: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c8378bf4-996c-4569-b547-75edbd03aaf0&displaylang=EN

OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) can also open (and let you edit the files) too, for free =)

The only way to open an .xls document is with Microsoft Excel. You obviously do not have MS Excel on your computer.
