Spybot & ad aware are best spyware removers and are free.

As of antivirus, Norton (Symantec) is the worst, avoid it. Kaspersky is good.

i will say avg is the best anti virus, it uses low resources and it is free. it works just fine on my old 200mhz computer, so it should be fine on a newer computer. also spybot and lavasoft are the best free spyware apps.
norton internet secuirty does both but it slows the computer down a lot. however it does have some of the best detection. webroot spy sweeper is also a very good spyware app. windows live security center has all of the protection too. i just use the scanner on the website it cleans and removes files but doesnt have live protection.

The best antvirus is free; AVG. Go to http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

As far as spyware you need these three programs to cover all your bases; Spybot, Lavasoft Adaware and finally a-squared free.

All the programs I listed are free and work as good if not better than what you could buy.

My personal favorite Spyware remover is Ad-aware (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html) and Spybot at a close second (http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10122137.html).

In terms of an anti-virus program, Antivir is the perfect and free solution (http://www.download.com/AntiVir-Personal-Edition/3000-2239-10322934.html).

Antivir is unobtrusive (no pop-ups, like MCafee or Norton) and is very easy to configure and use.

Good luck. :)

My personal opinion:
AV = NOD32
Spyware = Spy Sweeper

Whatever you choose, good luck.
