If you fly to Israel and want to keep the cost under control, fly to Europe and take a charter to Israel. You may fly any of the European airlines that will fly from the US with a stop in their home country. El Al, the Israeli carrier, is probably the safest in the world, but also the most expensive. In addition, it is very expensive to buy tickets and during Passover and the Jewish holidays of September, it is virtually impossible. My recommendation is to fly to Athens or Amsterdam and take a flight from there to Tel Aviv airport.

You may of course take a tour organized and supervised by a travel agency. Remember, Israel is expensive but very beautiful and fun.

You have to look for ticket in very early like 6 to 10months before because if you wait until last min then it will cost a lot. I don't think you necessarily have to go via Europe. I got a relatively cheap flight (roughly 900) from continental flying through Newark, NJ from Kansas city on less than 21 days notice. A friend of mine who is also flying out for business flew via Frankfurt on the return and Zurich on the way out (He wanted to rack up those frequent flier miles) and it came out to be a bit less, but he'll be bumming around the airport for an extra 8 hours overall, much less an extra hour or two flight time.
